Sa Sa Sushi EC1

Where
Sa Sa Sushi
422 St John Street, EC1V 4NJ

What
Nasu Deng – £6.50
Two chunky halves of aubergine were soft and smoky beneath plenty of sweet miso glaze. This was delicious and moreish and a top class example of a vegetable dish seen everywhere.

Miso – £2.50
Sa Sa Sushi serves some really great miso – so often it is gritty and lacks flavour and taste but this is packed with seaweed, tofu and spring onions with a great rich umami taste.

Assorted Sashimi – £18.00
(3 pieces of tuna, 2 salmon, 3 turbot, 2 sea bass, 1 sweet prawn)
Because it was late our turbot was substituted with 2 pieces of mackerel and 2 of sea bream. The tuna was fab, thick cut from a great piece of fish, the salmon fat ran thinly and evenly and it melted in the mouth, sweet prawn was also firm and fresh. The mackerel and sea bream were ok but not something to add to any future sashimi orders.

Crunchy Tuna Roll – £7.00
A seared tuna, salmon, spicy mayo and avocado filling with crunch coming from wasabi tobiko on the outside and tempura flakes on the inside. Very delicious but not quite as good as the same dish at Pham Sushi.

Vegetable Tempura – £7.00
Our original order was the Tempura Deluxe (£10.20 for 3 King prawns 4 pieces of vegetables) but they were out of king prawns. We asked for a whole portion of sweet potato tempura instead of mixed vegetables and they could only offer butternut squash so we gave it a try. The batter was crispy and light but we missed the amazing contrast of the dense woody sweetness you can only get from sweet potato tempura.

Drink
1 large hot Sake – £7.00
2 Green Tea – £2.00

Atmosphere
We ate at 9.45pm on a Monday evening and there was only one other couple in restaurant but there was still a good atmosphere from the chattering waitresses and chopping chefs. The central sushi station has been moved to the front of the restaurant so some tables now miss out on watching the chefs at work which is a shame.

Offers
There are no current offers but the menu has an excellent selection of sashimi, sushi and combination menus of varying prices.

Verdict
Go!
We will definitely go back to Sa Sa Sushi if in the area and will continue to use their delivery service (minimum £15 order within 2 mile radius). It doesn’t push Pham Sushi from top spot but Sa Sa Sushi is the best place for Japanese food in Angel.
